Over the next few weeks I’ll be looking into how millions of years ago the bitter sour orange so prized by marmalade makers around the world came to be, and how one of the most ancient varieties – the Nanzhuang Orange of Taiwan – is sadly now on the world’s endangered species list at @iucn_congress. Supporting biodiversity is an extremely important task for all of us, so by seeking out unusual varieties of citrus fruit – and buying from the makers that use them – we can save these types for future generations.

I’ll show you how the aboriginal Saixia people of Taiwan are reestablishing the Nanzhuang Orange in their tribal forests, and how the work by Taiwan’s Forestry Conservation Agency @fanca_taiwan is helping the Saixia protect and preserve their native citrus trees. I’ll also look at how Taiwanese star preserve maker @keya_jam_taiwan is working with chefs, small producers and online stores to showcase Taiwanese citrus fruit and native ingredients to the world.

Though 2024 will be a hard year it will also offer the chance to make changes that will help this world. Marmalade making provides employment for small start-up businesses, supporting farmers and agriculture, sharing old ways and techniques, teaching people about cooking without waste and preserving. Let’s get even more people excited about it.
